Start with your own travel details
Prepare a short note with your nationality, passport type, intended purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, and all planned border crossings. Include the countries or regions you visit immediately before and after mainland China.
Use these details when reading official guidance or contacting the relevant Chinese embassy or consulate. An article about a different passport, a previous year or a different type of visit is not enough to establish your eligibility. The National Immigration Administration’s policy pages are a useful starting point.
Separate the different entry arrangements
| Arrangement to check | What needs attention |
|---|---|
| A visa obtained before travel | The visa category, permitted entries, validity and allowed stay shown in the documents. |
| A visa exemption | The applicable passport, visit purpose, dates and conditions of that policy. |
| Visa-free transit | The whole onward journey, eligible port and permitted area, as well as passport and timing requirements. |
Choose the relevant official guidance first. These arrangements have different conditions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Check a transit route from beginning to end
China’s visa-free transit policies include conditions covering onward travel, entry ports and the areas where travellers may stay. A short visit alone does not establish eligibility. Check your complete route against the current National Immigration Administration transit guidance.
Write each flight or other international connection in sequence. Then check that the places you want to visit fit the applicable conditions. If you change a connection, airport or destination, review the entry plan again before accepting the change.
Keep the documents consistent
Use the name and travel-document details required by each booking or application, and check them carefully before submission. Keep your accommodation address, travel dates, onward booking information and any application documents together in a folder you can access offline.
After a passport renewal or a name correction, review existing reservations and entry documents rather than assuming the change transfers automatically. A saved itinerary is useful supporting information; it does not itself grant permission to enter.
Plan for accommodation registration
For hotel stays, the hotel handles accommodation registration. For stays outside hotels, the National Immigration Administration provides separate registration guidance, including official online channels. If staying with friends or in a private home, work through that guidance with your host before arrival.
Keep the actual address and host or hotel contact details accessible. If the accommodation changes, make sure your saved travel information and any required registration reflect where you are staying.
Recheck when the journey changes
Review the entry plan again close to departure and whenever the passport, dates, purpose or border crossings change. This includes a side trip that leaves mainland China and a later return: check both journeys rather than assuming the original arrangement covers the return.
- Use the latest official page, not a screenshot without a date.
- Read the full eligibility conditions, not just the headline.
- Keep the link and the date you checked it.
- Resolve an unclear requirement with the relevant authority before relying on it.
